This project dedicated to sculpture is the first of a series of short-term presentations introducing alternatives and possibilities discovered by contemporary artists who use classical approaches in their work.

In the recent years there has been a remarkable turn towards sculpture, assessing the modernist tradition and stimulating reflection on the significance of figuration in the context of new materials and media. Its protagonists turn back to a kind of primitivism, reductivism, plasticity and understandability, or on the contrary to ambivalence of material and meaning, to playing with expectations and with the evident or latent performativity of the sculptural work.

The project aims to present – without seeking to be either systematic or exhaustive – the above mentioned aspects of this turn to sculpture. Our approach to the issue is expressed by the metaphor of a “store-room”: Artworks whose mutual relations are not defined by any hierarchy nor interpretation can be encountered in one place. Our intention is to display loosely structured examples of a certain tendency, which cannot be perceived as a programme, but rather as a summary of individual reactions to the possibilities of sculpture (as artefact and creation) in contemporary art.
